Detailed description of Waterway Hills Golf Course, CLOSED 2015
Waterway Hills Golf Course is a Public, 27 hole golf course facility in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The facility has 3 9-hole courses, the -Lakes, Ravine, and Oaks.
The 27-hole course opened in 1975 as Skyway Golf Club and its name was changed to Waterway Hills in 1984.
Waterway Hills Golf Club was designed by Robert Trent Jones. The layout is "classic" Jones, with strategic landing area's crowned greens and superb bunkering.
The only way to get to the course is on an enclosed people mover over the Intracoastal Waterway.
Once over you'll find 27 golf holes, set amid woodlands and lakes in tranquil seclusion. Waterway Hills offers a traditional design with a rolling terrain and strategically placed bunkers. The Oaks, Lakes and Ravine courses each have their own challenges and personalities indicative of their names.
The course closed in June, 2015.

Waterway Hills is one of the most unique golf courses I've ever played, mostly because I can never remember having to hop aboard a tram to go over water to arrive at a golf course---and believe me, that's the only way you can get there. Since it has 27-holes, you can select the combination that best suits your game, but make sure you discuss this with the Pro Shop before you book your starting time. You see the tram when you drive down the (north-south) highway, on the west side, so it's nearly impossible to miss & worth the effort to play, especially since it's so reasonably priced.

The tram ride across the Intracoastal Waterway sets the tone for a beautiful day. From the air, gorgeous facility. Most of the holes are challenging and quite beautiful. On many holes, some major local knowledge is needed... like how many yards to lay up before a lake, ravine, etc. I can't wait to go back and play again now that I know more about it. The day we played the course was loaded with kids. Fathers bringing their sons. How much that contributed to our 5+ hr. round, I don't know. Groups are sent off rapid fire onto the 1st tee. I think it was mostly vacationers from Northeast the week we played. I haven't encountered slow play like that very often in Myrtle Beach and am not sure if it was the fault of Waterway Hills or just the fact that we hit a day with lots of fathers and sons. Those kids had a tremendous time hacking it all over the place and their dads let them drive the carts a little and bought them ice cream at the turn. The father's were nervous wrecks, didn't seem like they were enjoying it a bit. Kids leaving clubs all over, etc. It was all good though!

I played the Ravine and Oaks courses and think the Lakes is a better course than Ravine. I would play this course again.
